1440 x 900 under Ubuntu

After the old VAIO monitor died I replaced it with a AOC 19" widescreen LCD. The only problem was when I boot into Ubuntu there was no 1440x900 resolution to choose from. The video card is an old nVidia RIVA TNT (or something similar). After digging around some I discovered a command that allowed me to configure the monitor being used and get 1440x900 resolution.

sudo displayconfig-gtk

I then select under Model

Generic >> LCD Panel 1440x900 (with Widescreen Monitor checked off)

then I was able to select 1440x900 resolution

closed screen and rebooted

Update : I later discovered that the same screen could be accessed from the menu Applications >> Other >> Screens and Graphics.
